(born August 1, 1956) is a former American adult-entertainment performer, appearing in films during the 1970s. She is a member of the AVN Hall of Fame and the XRCO Hall of Fame.
C.J. Laing, a native of New York, was living in San Francisco. A fan of 1970s San Francisco music, she hitchhiked there and stayed in a communal house with the Angels of Light. To earn extra money, she auditioned for the Mitchell Brothers and appeared in a "loop" as part of the series "Juke Joint." In New York, the Mitchell Brothers introduced her to the Buckley Brothers who cast her in her first feature film with Jamie Gillis in 1974 under the name Gwen Starr.
Laing appeared in over 50 films and "loops" during the 1970s and is best known for her roles in Anyone But My Husband and Barbara Broadcast. In Anyone But My Husband, Laing stars as a neglected wife who has affairs with a series of lovers. Over the course of the film, Laing experiences bondage, whipping, fisting, and deep throat oral sex.
Laing is quoted in Time Magazine as saying: "I purposely would not act, I despised the people in these films that said they were actors. I was like, 'You've got to be kidding me! This is about fucking and sucking!'"
During the late 1970s, Laing performed live shows at the Mitchell Brothers O'Farrell Theatre and other theaters owned by the Mitchell Brothers. Her last film was New York City Woman in 1979.
Laing was inducted into the X-Rated Critics Organization Hall of Fame as a "Film Pioneer." In 2005, she was also inducted into the AVN Hall of Fame as "one of the most exciting stars of the so-called Golden Age of porn" and as "an energetic performer who turned in some of the strongest performances of her time."
Sensuous and gorgeous slender Jewish blonde hardcore film actress C.J. Laing was born as Wendy Miller on August 1, 1956 in New York City. Laing first became involved in the adult cinema business while living and working in San Francisco, California (she was a groupie for the rock band The Grateful Dead); she made her debut in a series of loops called "Juke Joint" that were made by the Mitchell Brothers of Behind the Green Door (1972) fame. After returning to New York, C.J. appeared in her first theatrical porno feature under the pseudonym of Gwenn Star while still in her late teens in 1974. She went on to act in over 50 movies and loops combined in a brief, yet still eventful career which lasted a mere five years. Laing was usually cast in victim roles (she gets brutally raped in both Sex Wish (1976) and The Taking of Christina (1976)). Her sex scenes tended to be quite raw, intense and kinky; they often involved such extreme carnal acts as bondage, fisting, and anal penetration. Among the top East Coast hardcore directors C.J. regularly worked for are Radley Metzger, Roberta Findlay, and Shaun Costello. Laing's most memorable roles include the lead as neglected and frustrated young housewife Nora Pelham in Anyone But My Husband (1975) a much mistreated hooker in the shocking Dominatrix Without Mercy (1976); especially sexy and desirable as lusty reporter Roberta in the terrific Barbara Broadcast (1977) and hard-bitten vice detective Irene Murray in the notoriously nasty roughie Water Power (1977). In the late 70s C.J. performed in live shows at the Mitchell Brothers O'Farrell Theatre and several other strip clubs owned by the Mitchell Brothers in the San Francisco area. She openly admits she had problems with drugs during her 70s heyday and never took acting in porno seriously. In the early 80's Laing was romantically involved with 70s adult cinema superstar Harry Reems; they lived together for a short spell in Malibu, California. C.J. was inducted into the X-Rated Critics Organization Hall of Fame as a film pioneer and was subsequently inducted into the AVN Hall of Fame in 2005 for her strong and impressive contributions to the 70s Golden Age of porn. C.J. Laing now lives in San Francisco, California.
